Its fall! The leaves are changing colors and your children are getting bigger. You want to document this season to remember how cute they look in those brown corduroy pants that stinking adorable pumpkin sweater! Because next year, they probably won’t allow you to dress them, so savor this moment. So the question is, do you book a mini session or a full session?
You need to first take a look at your family, and see what would work best for them. If your children like props, and love a good theme, but get bored easily – then perhaps a mini session is your best bet! Mini sessions are usually themed, and can last anywhere from 10-15 minutes.
A full session would allow your family up to 1 full hour to walk around a location of your choice. Your family will be able to play, laugh, have fun and make a really great memory out of this. Your photographer (me!) would walk with you, capture fun candids of your family enjoying each other, and pose you when we get to the really amazing spots. Some people think that the 1 hour is too long for a child, but, when you really think about it, we aren’t photographing for that entire hour, your children are running, laughing and having a great time!
Both sessions will allow you to obtain beautiful images of your family, that’s no doubt! It really depends on you and your family and what you are looking for. With all of that said, let’s jump into some photo examples of a fall mini session and a full session below, and don’t forget to check out our list of mini sessions for the 2020-2021 year here, and to book your full session click here!
Ahhh, Beach Portraits in Cape May… I always say that Cape May is a magical place. It really is. It could be raining somewhere else in New Jersey, but Cape May is completely different. It’s as if there is a bubble around this place, keeping it pure from the other areas. Of course it does rain here, but oftentimes its a thousand percent different than the rest of the state. Either way, it’s one of my favorite beach locations to visit, and I can not wait to go back!
Family Beach Portraits in Cape May are the best. I am not just saying that because I visit often, or even that I am a photographer. Let’s be super real and talk about Cape May really quick. Cape May, by default is a vacation destination but it is so much more than that. Cape May is home to so many amazing people who love the environment and love the beaches. The dunes and the beach grass in Cape May is something you would imagine in your dreams, or see in a beautiful movie and just wish to go get your feet sandy. So having your Beach Portraits in Cape May is, well, a dream come true!
If you don’t believe me yet, just take a look at these beautiful images. I would gladly hang these all over my walls! They’re absolutely stunning and I couldn’t have wished for a more beautiful day!

It’s the Historic Cape May Lighthouse! Did you know that it is the third documented lighthouse at the southern tip of New Jersey, and it has been an aid-to-navigation for mariners and an attraction for visitors since it was built in 1859?
Yup! Very cool! Click here to learn more about it’s history and include it in your plans the next time you go on holiday to Cape May!
The Ocean City Fishing Pier is one of my favorite locations to shoot at. Whether it is sunset, sunrise, or 9am during bright sun and were 100% into beach season! Having a Beach session at the OC Fishing pier offers both the shade that we need AND the versatility of having beach and a being under a pier. This area is also in a great location at the end of the boardwalk, which doesn’t get that many tourists. There is also some amazing Johnsons Popcorn down this end, if you’re up for a snack after your session!
Jackie is an amazing friend of mine and a photographer right here in South Jersey. She is the owner of Stinsman Photography which is a full service portrait studio in Burlington, NJ! Check her out if you’re in that area. I have photographed her family a few times now and I love seeing her boys grow up! They’re getting SO BIG! We had a ton of fun on the beach and they were so excited when it was time for some candids! (Because candids mean, running in the water with Mom and Dad!)
These boys will not remember me, they won’t remember the camera, they won’t remember smiling for the lady 12ft away haha (yes, I am protecting my clients with social distancing and using my Nikon 70-200mm lens!). What they WILL remember though, is the fun time they had splashing in the waves with their Mom, and Dad throwing them up in the air. Years from now they will see these pictures and say “Wow! Look how strong Dad was, flipping me around like a feather! I want to be like him one day!” or “Look at how beautiful my Mom was, and she didn’t even care if she got her dress wet. She really loved being in the moment!” And then they will hug, and laugh and remember how much fun it was, and then they’ll do it again and again. It becomes a tradition. Taking family pictures on the beach, putting all of their attention into having fun and laughing. Those laughs, those are real genuine laughs. Let’s keep capturing that stuff. Because that is the stuff that keeps our hearts pure.

Each year I plan my family session on Brigantine Beach. It’s something that I can look back on and say we all did together over summer break. Summer is a time where our kids are exploring and really coming into their own person and growing right in front of our eyes. Brigantine, NJ has always been a special place for me growing up. I guess that is why I love having sessions there.
This family session on Brigantine Beach was adorable! This little man was all smiles and loved hanging out with his Mommy and Daddy! I loved their aqua, cream and blue colors, I thought they looked so good on the beach! The best thing ever, is when clients show up camera ready!
If you are thinking about having a family session on Brigantine Beach, reach out to me and we can chat about it! The golden hour is my absolute favorite time to take photos because that is one hour before the sun starts to set. I have an app on my phone that tells me exactly what time the sun will start to set and when the last light will be.
On the Jersey Shore, we have amazing sunrises over the ocean (in the East) and our sunsets are in the West (behind the dunes). At 7:00pm in August it is the perfect time for beach portraits! The sun is setting. There is a gorgeous golden glow from where the sun starts to touch the tippy top of the dunes. And the backlighting from the sun, is like we are catching a glimpse of Heaven. How lucky we are to experience the beauty of the Jersey Shore.
You can’t visit the Jersey Shore without bringing some of this sunshine home with you, now can you?
